A Short Story By Abby Brigham

My dad's Red Ram Truck rolled to a stop. My brother and dad helped me get out of the tall truck by holding my hand. I felt a warm breeze and took off my black plain hoodie. I threw it in the truck and slammed the door. I felt a little nauseous because of the hour and half-car drive.

“Are you ready to go inside goober?” My dad said, smiling and offering his hand. “

Yes! I'm starving!” I replied feeling like my stomach was about to dry up with no water and food!

As we walked into the Circle K gas station I smelt pizza, chicken wings, and grease all mixed into one scent.

“Hey, Dad! I need to go to the restroom real quick!” I said while looking up at his brown eyes and hair. As I walked quickly to the bathroom I saw him get in line with his Pepsi. In the bathroom, I saw dirt on the white ground raising my eyebrows and covering my nose, knowing it smelled disgusting! Before stepping into the hideous stall, I covered my white high top Converse with paper towels.

After I walked out of the diaper party, I sighed... Taking a breath of the cold air. I started running to my dad and almost ripped my blue ribbon jeans by getting caught on a hook.

“Whatcha getting!” I asked who I thought my dad was… I grabbed my “Dad's” hand shaking it looking confused because he didn't respond to me.

“Excuse me! Get off!”

A random stranger with a gray shirt, black jeans, and a hat that looked exactly like my dad's said with anger in his eyes. My jaw dropped to the floor! I felt as awkward as a fish out of water!

I said “Oh my gosh! I am so sorry!” with a tear dropping from my hazel eyes. I rushed out of the store almost tripping myself and almost ripping my jeans again! I threw myself in the car! While laying on the black leather seats I knew I never wanted to be seen again in that gas station!

Finally, after a few minutes of sitting in the cold car, I saw my dad coming. Dressed in the same clothes as the stranger I had met. The dirt around the station was on his shoes. He opened the car's driver seat door. He was about to turn on the car with his new keys...But then all of a sudden he saw the trail the tears had left on my face.

He asked, “What happened? Did Brayden do something?” and then of course looked at my brother with his new red shirt and Jordans with a glare. I was scared to tell him. Thoughts were running through my mind. After a second or two of being frozen, I finally said, “I accidentally held a stranger's hand, thinking it was you!” I couldn't help but think if he was making fun of me in his mind. Or if he was embarrassed by me. However, he wasn't thinking of any of those things.

“ It's okay goober! We all do those things sometimes..” he said with a chuckle. I felt so relieved for some reason. Maybe I was overreacting? I kinda started laughing a little bit too. Furthermore, I realized it was a dumb little mistake. I also realized I will probably never see that guy again! Several times after that, I went to that gas station again and never saw him again! I went on with my life knowing that you have to let the little things go. Or they'll just haunt you forever!
